The Science Behind Rice Water

The water that's filtered from the rice after soaking or fermentation is known as “rice water,” and it has skin-loving compounds such as antioxidants, vitamins B and E, amino acids and inositol. All of these ingredients aid in reducing inflammation, protecting skin from oxidative damage and supporting the skin barrier.

Fermented rice water toners do one step more and break down the rice molecules into smaller molecules that can be absorbed more easily. It can increase the concentration of good enzymes during the fermentation process. That's why a rice water toner for face is said to have an effect of improving skin texture, evening out its tone and infusing a natural glow which is why it is a main ingredient in Korean rice toner formulas.

• Skipping the Patch Test: Some skin types may be irritated by even natural ingredients such as rice water, particularly sensitive skin. There's a reason why it's important to always patch test before regular use.

• Using Expired Homemade Rice Water: Rice water toner is not ideal to keep at room temperature. If it is not preserved properly it will begin to go rancid. So, use it within a few days, or consider a preservative free store bought version.

• Over-Exfoliating: Some rice toners have mild exfoliants; using them alongside other exfoliating products can irritate the skin.

• Ignoring Ingredient Lists: Not all rice toners are created equal. Check for added alcohol, fragrance, or fillers that could not be appropriate for your skin type.

• Applying on Broken Skin: Avoid using any toner, including rice water toner on open cuts, active breakouts, or irritated skin.
